Eratosthenes

Eratosthenes is comprised of 12 sections, each lasting thirty seconds and defined by a line of text. The accompanying audio files comprises 12 tracks, one for each section. In performance, the files should be played through a player capable of playing the audio in “random” or “shuffle” mode, or arranged in any order the group sees fit. The volume of playback is determined by the proper balance of all instruments (explained below).

In each section, each performer is given a choice of pitches (or rolled cymbal). The performer shall choose one of the pitches to perform during the appropriate section. No two instruments should play the same pitch at the same time. In such a case, one performer may switch to another pitch chosen from those provided. The switch should be made as inconspicuously as possible. Timbral effects such as harmonics, alternate fingerings and so on are left to the discretion of the performer. The starting time and length of each note is to be decided by the performer, as long as the note does not last longer than the total length of the section. Each entrance should begin from a volume of niente, crescendo to a soft or medium soft level, and then fade to niente on the release.

At no time should any one instrument dominate the section – all instruments should strive to match together across the ensemble, including the electronics.

Note: Contact the composer if you would like the instrumentation adapted for your specific ensemble.
