poems
poems is a two-part work based on the poetry of e. e. cummings. both pieces involve 4 vocal parts which use a variety of percussion instruments. the poems are not presented in a linear, more traditional manner, but rather as source material for an acoustical environment that reflects the aural and visual essence of the poems. The parts may be performed together as a set or individually.
t,h;r:u;s,h;e:s, the first part, utilizes graphic notation and features motives derived from the call of a wood thrush. The parts are loosely coordinated.
air, the second part, is a non-linear structure where each page of the score is a set of structural units including a center box and a number of satellites connected to the box by lines. Each performer selects a page, and begins performing the material in the center box. Each satellite must be completed before returning to the center, and the piece is complete when all performers have fully completed all of the notation on the page.
